Showgoers noted a new grille, coupe-like greenhouse and flush-mounted headlights that render the model’s face without a stark transition between hood and bumper. Short overhangs and simple, elegant lines hint at the Universe’s dynamic character while keeping the overall look classy, upscale and understated.
The Concept Universe is built on Volvo’s latest structural and technological architecture, and hints at a more dynamic and beautiful look for large Volvo models to come. Said upcoming models will be global as part of Volvo’s business strategy—in which they’ll develop and produce only globally-relevant vehicles.
"This is the next step in the proud history of luxury Volvo sedans", said Volvo’s Stefan Jacoby before revealing the Concept Universe. "We will listen very carefully to what the Chinese car buyers think of the design. Later, we will also show the Concept Universe in other parts of the world. This brings it into the global context we are aiming for with all our cars."
End of the day, the Universe intends to be on the same level as comparable models from Mercedes and BMW when it goes into production.
At the concept’s launch, no mention of available powerplants was made, though the Universe—which could become the new S80—might be available with diesel or even hybrid propulsion. Of course, this model will ship with the latest in infotainment technology, and could launch numerous new and innovative safety systems for the Volvo brand.
