An example of the latter is the body and the chassis. The Volvo V70 and Volvo V70 XC have a simple and functional MacPherson-type front-suspension, while the rear uses a Multi-link design.The customer can choose between three different chassis settings: Comfort, Dynamic or Sport. Comfort and Dynamic are standard, depending on the engine alternative, while the stiffer - but not lowered - Sport chassis is an option.
Along with keeping the V70 as short as it could be, Volvo wanted to ensure that it would be as stiff as possible, a not inconsiderable challenge in a vehicle whose rear section lifts up, particularly since Volvo also demands a vertical tailgate for increased storage space.
The technical solution for this was bonding rather than welding since the joins are continuous, giving significantly higher torsional stiffness, and the bonded join steals much less space from areas such as the luggage compartment.
For comfort's sake, Volvo has given the V70 the latest generation of ergonomic seats with multiple adjustments, several high-grade climate control systems, and four levels of sound systems.
Volvo contends that for a wagon to be superior it must have a superior rear seat, one that's comfortable and easy to fold, either as a whole or in sections. As well, the luggage compartment floor must be flat with the seat down and it mustn't be necessary to remove the head restraints and store them elsewhere.
