Ouch. But you might be different, so here we go…
MPGe conveys the energy consumption of a non-gasoline vehicle in terms of how many miles the vehicle could go on an amount of fuel that has the equivalent energy content as a gallon of gasoline. The energy obtainable from burning one US gallon of gasoline is 115,000 BTU.
According to the EPA, that amount of energy is equivalent to 33.7 kWh of electricity. So how far an EV can go on 33.7 kWh of electricity is essentially its MPGe.
The most fuel-efficient gas-burning Focus is the SE sedan with the (fuel-economy optimized) SFE package, which has a combined rating of 33 US mpg (28 city/40 highway).
That the Ford Focus Electric is so much more efficient than its gas brethren is an eye opener. Some of it comes down to the fact that EVs just ace the city and idling portions of their fuel economy tests. But EVs are also extremely efficient in their transfer of energy to motion. Basically, when it comes to energy losses, their powertrains are way more air-tight than gas-powered vehicles.
