Canada's automotive industry has made it quite clear that it won't be able to meet this objective in the foreseeable future, which could mean Canadians will be short a few vehicles, and for that matter a few vehicle categories, in the next decade.
"It's an admirable goal but at this point . . . with the product portfolio, the technology, the cost and price issues, we don't see a way to get there," the newspaper reported him saying.
Not only will this create a problem for Canadian consumers, but it could affect workers on the automaker's production lines. Grimaldi continued by saying Canada faces a "harmonization" problem due to its high percentage (90%) of U.S. automotive exports to the United States, a jurisdiction that has not ratified the Kyoto Accord, and therefore will not be requiring the hefty cut to overall fuel economy ratings.
