Mikko Hirvonen (Ford Fiesta RS) took the lead during the second day of the Rally of Sweden, while the top-five drivers are separated by less than 15 seconds before the final stage.

Mads Ostberg (Ford Fiesta RS), who concluded the first day in first position, was forced to open the road today (Saturday).

The young Norwegian driver quickly lost time in front and was overtaken by Mikko Hirvonen’s Ford Fiesta RS at midday. The Finn then lost valuable time after a spin, but he still ended the day with a lead of 7.5 seconds ahead of Ostberg.

Behind, Petter Solberg (Citroen DS3 R3), Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford Focus RS) and Sébastien Ogier (Citroen DS3 R3) left Ostberg and Hirvonen clear the track in front, and took this opportunity to get closer to both drivers.

The result is a gap of only 15 seconds before the top-5 drivers before the third and final day.

After he lost a lot of time yesterday, as he opened the road, and then suffered a puncture, Sébastien Loeb (Citroen DS3 R3) set the pace on Saturday afternoon’s loop, with three special stages victories.

Despite better performances, he still stands in P6, 1m41 behind Hirvonen. Kimi Raikkonen (Citroen DS3 R3) stands in 7th position, more than five minutes behind.

Petter Solberg has appealed a 10-second penalty that he received for having been late at a time control. The Norwegian would take the lead would he win the appeal.

Overall classification after day 2:
1. Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) in 2h33’16’’2
2. Mads Ostberg (Ford) + 7’’5
3. Petter Solberg (Citroën) + 9’’9

5. Sebastien Ogier (Citroën) + 14’’8

8. P-G Andersson (Ford) + 5’31’’0
