A downpour in the build-up to the race at the Mid-Ohio circuit meant that everyone started on wet tyres, but with a dry line already emerging, drivers who pitted for slicks at the end of the first lap soon took command of the race.
Unfortunately, Penske's Ryan Briscoe was not one of them and he had to work hard to get back in front of the pack. The Australian managed to finish on top just in front of teammate Hélio Castroneves. Polesitter Castroneves came through to second, but he had to defend his position from Scott Dixon (Ganassi) constant attacks in the closing laps, with KV Racing duo Will Power and Oriol Servia taking fourth and fifth. Many yellows were caused by a great number of accidents involving Ryan Hunter-Reay, Enrique Bernoldi, Marco Andretti, AJ Foyt IV, Dan Wheldon and Milka Duno to name a few.
