WHAT A SURPRISE!
Daewoo is a Korean automaker that showed up quite discretely last year in Canada. Actually, the name Daewoo was already known but only by a few people who had earlier bought Optimas, a small compact car that was sold by Passeport dealers almost ten years ago. The Optima was based on an older Opel Kadett by GM. But now, all Daewoo cars are?originals! The Nubira was introduced last year as the middle model of the line-up. But the car, offered as a sedan or a wagon, was already three years old.

So that is why Daewoo has reintroduced the Nubira for 2000. It is still offered as a beautifully redesigned sedan or wagon. The new Nubira is more distinguishable with the latest grille design and completely redone front headlamps that give it a more modern look, almost «new edge». The shell of the car stays almost the same but I really liked the treatment of the new rear taillamps. They kind of remind me of the Mazda Protegé.

Only one engine is available under the hood of a Daewoo Nubira, a very efficient 2.0-liter dual overhead cam four cylinder that pumps out an honest 129 horsepower with 136 lb-ft of torque. It is available with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. By the way, the car is front-wheel driven. Technically speaking, the Nubira has a lot to offer that resembles the equipment of some of the best cars of the same category. The steering is of the rack and pinion type and braking is done through front disks and rear drums on the base SX model and disks at the rear (and ABS) for the more luxurious CDX version. The car runs on Khumo 185/65 R 14 tires that were surprising on dry pavement (but not as efficient on the wet). The front suspension is of the McPherson type while the rear one relies upon a torsion axle with control arms.
