2003 Chevrolet Malibu - Incentives Still Driving Sales

When the current Malibu came on the scene in 1996 as a 1997 model many thought it was a slick import. The stylized wave logo made it difficult to make out the somewhat hidden bowtie. Was Chevy trying to hide its identity?

Being that the new Malibu was effectively replacing the unloved Corsica while the rest of Chevy's 1997 sedan lineup included only the Cavalier and somewhat dated Lumina, neither making any ground in the import war, it probably made sense to allow their new midsize 4-door a little bit of separation. That said with model year 2000's center grille and emblem changes, bringing the bowtie proudly up front, there doesn't seem to be any more need to maintain a low profile.

And why should they? The Malibu represents an excellent value in today's competitive midsize market. With a standard V6, 4-speed automatic transmission and a wealth of luxury features including air-conditioning, tilt steering, power locks with remote keyless entry and a power remote trunk, split-folding rear seatbacks and an AM/FM/CD audio system, its base $22,980 price is hard to beat.

Move up to the $25,800 LS and the list grows to include fog lamps, dual reading lights on the inside rearview mirror, illuminated vanity mirrors, premium cloth upholstery and a 6-way power driver's seat. Other items standard on the LS but optional on the base Malibu include power mirrors, alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows and anti-lock brakes.
