2003 Chevrolet SS Concept - The Stuff of Dreams

It's been a while since Chevy has played with big blocks like it did with this 1967 Camaro SS 396 in RS trim. (Photo: MuscleCarPlanet.com)

Other than a Z06 Corvette it's been a long time since Chevy made a muscle car that I lusted after. The days of big block Camaros, Monte Carlos and Chevelles are long gone, or at least I thought.

Chevy's new SS concept is right out of a dream. Some believe, of course, that it will stay a dream without any chance of becoming reality. But this is a new General Motors we're dealing with now, with a revitalized product focus led by a very determined Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. What does that mean to the enthusiast? Simply that anything is possible.

The new SS concept introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 5th is that anything. Authentic cheers were heard throughout the crowd, normally a tough audience of jaded media scribes that packed GM's arena-style presentation area during the automaker's concept car unveilings. Most of us got into the writing business because we have a passion for cars, and that day GM gave us something to invoke the muse in all of us.

Of course red is the color of passion, the hue that adorns legendary Italian sports cars and luscious glossy lipstick, like I said the stuff of dreams. The Victory Red SS came out of GM Design's Los Angeles, California studio obviously inspired by Malibu cruise-ins, the city not necessarily the car.
