2004 Mercedes-Benz GST - DC Should Consider Dubbing It the 'No-GST' in Canada

The good news is DaimlerChrysler AG has announced it will produce a new ultra-lux full-size crossover for the 2005 model year. What could be the bad news? That would be a question for the Mercedes-Benz Canada marketing department to answer. They'll be stuck spinning one of the most negative acronyms in Canadian history being that Mercedes-Benz has dubbed the new 4WD wagon Grand Sports Tourer or GST. They'd do better to name it 'No-GST'.

The name aside, M-B's next generation SUV offers a unique balance of attributes that should attract as many customers looking for a sports wagon as those wanting an SUV. The full-size, performance oriented, high-tech, 4WD people and cargo hauler was described during its conceptual launch in this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit as "an all-rounder, combining the features of a number of established vehicle concepts into a new and distinctive format".

It sounds like a little something for everyone, that is if you feel comfortable parking a 5,150 mm (17.0 ft) long vehicle at your local supermarket. Its massive alloy rims, low profile tires and powerful V8 engine hint that it will prove more enjoyable out on the expressway, where six occupants arranged in three rows of seats will be able to while away the hours in serene luxury at high speed.

The concept car was shown sans B-pillar, the rear hinged doors allowing easy access for both front and rear passengers - no word yet if this will make production. Once inside an expansive greenhouse makes the spacious interior seem larger still, while variable-tint electrochromic glass spans overhead from the top of the windscreen to the rear quarters. As if a single screen video entertainment system would do, Mercedes includes individual screens for the DVD player and video game system incorporated into the backs of each front seat.
