Crossovers can pride themselves on offering the greatest variety of any class of vehicle. When it comes to size, capacity or price, the class now comprises the flagship models of many automakers and lets indecisive consumers enjoy the spaciousness of large vehicles, the cross-country capabilities of a few sport utility vehicles and a car-like ride.
Nevertheless, let's be honest: not all crossovers manage to incorporate all of these features successfully. But some do, and the Audi Q7 is one of them.
Extra large version
You can't help but be impressed by the Q7 the second you lay eyes on it. Its rounded contour suggests anything but a cramped interior and gives off an air of luxury and opulence. Its grille, which is based on Audi's new design, gives the Q7 a strong presence on the road and a gritty style that is not overly aggressive.
The Q7's interior conveys the same image. The materials, some of which are high-end, like the wood trim, while others are more common, like your basic plastic, blend together perfectly, and the quality of the finish is worthy only of praise. Getting into the Q7's spacious interior is easy, with both front and rear passengers enjoying lots of room and comfort.
The Q7 also has a third bench that can be folded flat. As an option, the third-row seats can be slid forward to provide load-through facility.
Not so simple
As is the case with most luxury vehicles--and make no mistake, the Q7 is definitely a luxury vehicle--the Q7's list of standard equipment is long and comprehensive. The huge sunroof, the 12-way power adjustable seats and the sound quality of the Bose audio system are exceptional.
But not everything can be so simple, and there is nothing simple about Audi's Multi Media Interface (MMI). Even if you manage to figure it out after a few tries, the MMI is a complex system, requiring two or three commands to change a setting. For example, finding your favourite radio station is a challenge when it isn't preset.
