An enticing proposition
An enticing proposition

Valencia, Spain - Often times when something is good for you, it does not taste good. Take some vegetables for example, they deliver all the necessary vitamins to help you lead a healthy lifestyle but our taste-buds do not always appreciate what they are coming into contact with. It can be very different for fruit. They taste sweet and transfer the good stuff when ingested. I would call a fruit a no-compromise vessel of goodness. Valencia is famous for its oranges. Oranges are delicious and a part of a healthy diet. Perhaps the German car-maker was attempting to draw a parallel between the car and the fruit...

The Elegance targets a more mature clientele.

According to Mercedes folks, the new C-Class is just that: a no-compromise sporty-luxury car that can do it all. They are so convinced that their product is the car of choice that they enlisted Mr Fernando Alonso himself to convey to people that the new C-Class is all that and a bag of oranges.

Big seller
In fact, Mercedes has much to be proud when it comes to the C-Class. Since its arrival in 1982, 6 million have been sold. From the first 190, to the revamps in 1993 and 2000, the then North American entry-level Mercedes has always had much to offer. Today, in 2007, this has never been truer. Mercedes-Benz has wisely put everything it knows into this latest iteration of its best-selling car.

A shrunken S-Class
The first thought that comes to mind when looking at the W204 C-Class is that it looks like an S-Class that spent too much time in the dryer. I am of the opinion that a strong family resemblance is important for the sole purpose of image. There are next to no negative aspects to the new C's exterior features. In fact, many improvements have been made namely side-view mirrors that can actually be consulted.

To differentiate the two Elegance and Avantgarde (Base and Sport in Canada) trim levels, Mercedes has adorned the cars with specific front fascias and side trim as well as wheels. The Elegance is exactly that with a more subtle approach to luxury while the other bares a huge Three-pointed star in the center of its grille. Essentially, the Elegance should appeal to the older folk and the Avantgarde, to the younger.

The Avantgarde (right) bears a more muscular appearance.
