This week, I had the realization that sometimes I need to look at a vehicle from another perspective. Not just from the perspective of a journalist who has driven over 100 different cars in the last two years, but from the complete perspective of someone who might actually buy this car.
I picked up 2011 Mitsubishi RVR GT 4WD in ‘Kingfisher Blue’ and I couldn’t help but get a tiny bit excited. It just appears so... aggressive, cute, rugged and sporty all at once! For a few moments, I honestly forgot that I was a journalist test-driving this compact SUV.
I absolutely love how this thing looks, and I am not alone. In just seven days, I was stopped by four different women who commented on what a hot vehicle this was! Let's be honest ladies, for most of us, looks is one of the top three reasons we buy a car and there is nothing wrong with that.
The colour is fantastic, I never thought I would like a light blue coloured vehicle, however, this thing looks incredible. But colour aside; it is the overall exterior styling that really gets me excited. The shark style front nose and sharp angles say that this little guy means business. Yet the small size makes it feel totally approachable and very cute.
Cross shopping in this segment, you might also consider the Nissan Juke, Suzuki SX4 and Kia Sportage. All of them have very unique styling but this is by far my favourite of the bunch. I think it looks like a shorter version of the Outlander.
Step inside though and I am a little disappointed. All of the vehicles in the Mitsubishi family have the same simple interior: quite a lot of plastics, a very basic layout and overall just kind of dull. Other vehicles in this class all seem to be more upscale and modern.
What Mitsubishi has done well though is design a layout that makes everything easy to see and to access. There are three, large, well placed dials for heat and air and simple buttons for the radio.
My favourite feature on the GT 4WD is the huge, standard, panoramic sunroof that spans all the way from the front to the rear creating an open and roomy feeling in the cabin. At night, very cool ambient lighting surrounds it. The downside is that this huge roof doesn’t open at all.
