Common problems
Problem areas include clutch-plates in the transfer case which may need to be repaired and used with synthetic gear-oil to combat front wheel-slip while 4WD is engaged.

Get dirty and have fun with your 4WD.

Manual transmissions aren't without their problems either. Because of not being built with a detent ball and spring, Silverado and Sierra models with a stick are prone to spontaneously popping out of first gear.

Additionally, some models may shudder under acceleration because of the use of a two-piece driveshaft. The fix is to have a one-piece unit installed in its place.

Despite being a highly praised best-buy in a used truck, shoppers are best advised to ensure any applicable recall work has been completed. The Silverado / Sierra have a long list of recalls, the most significant of which deal with several concerns over power steering hoses and important brake components. Tailgate support cables are another recall area, as is a leaky fuel-rail retainer on the 5.3 litre engine which could cause a fire.

I spoke to Mike Babij, a used car salesperson and expert on used trucks. He tells me "motor vehicle manufactures recommend a maintenance package for their vehicles besides the usual oil change. Brake checks, front end inspections, and basic bumper to bumper checks are what makes a vehicle last to the high mileages that are seen these days. To make your car/truck investment last for as long as possible, a proactive approach is needed."

That said, try and look for a machine with a good dealer service record.

The key for longevity is maintenance.

Babij also mentions another area for concern with the Silverado / Sierra's. "Rear disc brakes. Once a very costly repair, the aftermarket has caught up and now the cost of a rear brake job is more acceptable. This expense is easily avoided if the common frugal consumer would have the rear brakes service at regular interval as their repair shops advise them to do."

It's probably never been easier to look for a used last-generation Silverado or Sierra. With a little bit of attention to detail and homework, the average shopper should have no trouble picking out a decent example that will last for years.
