Fuel economy is obviously not the core value in most large SUV purchases. Step inside the Avalanche and other reasons come quickly to mind. The dash is all GM pick-up, looking virtually the same from the lowly $22,410* base Silverado 1500 right up to the feature-filled $65,900* plus Cadillac Escalade EXT - excepting a few minor styling details. That said it's a good overall design, incorporating gauges and switchgear where you expect them. Front seats are large and supportive, with front and rear leg and headroom more than adequate for tall occupants. Expect the expected luxury fare on a vehicle with a base price nearing $40,000*. Power windows, mirrors and locks with remote access are standard, as is air-conditioning, cruise-control, a tilting leather-wrapped steering wheel, 6-way power 40/20/40 split front bench seat and a 6-speaker, AM/FM CD audio system. A new multi-zone manual-control HVAC system allowing the driver and front passenger to keep separate temperatures is also standard in the 2003 model.

Options include leather seating surfaces, front bucket seats with 2-way heat, power lumbar support and an all-new DVD player with a flip-down screen. A custom-designed Bose audio upgrade is also available. These systems now feature the latest generation Radio Data System that can interface with services such as XM Satellite Radio, another new 2003 model option.

A new driver convenience package adds memory equipped power adjustable pedals, plus an 8-button steering wheel that accesses the cruise control, audio system, trip calculator, fuel data and more. Also, new outside mirrors are powered to fold in for tight squeezes. They also tilt so you don't scuff the tires when parallel parking.

Standard safety features include four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, traction assist (ETS), a theft deterrent system, OnStar, side-impact airbags and new dual-level front airbags with a front passenger-sensing system, rather than the manual key operated front seat airbag deactivator.
