Another way to look at the Liberty Renegade versatility is from the purchasing aspect. Customers have the ability to add desired features for a more personalized, stylin' ride. Jeep recognizes that everyone has different tastes, therefore they've made the Liberty adaptable to all - I like that. The Renegade model's base price starts at $31,050 while the price as tested is $38,520. The premium for the special edition Jeep over some other compact SUVs, most of which aren't 4x4 capable, might put a slightly larger dent in the pocketbook but I feel it's worth it in the end, especially when factoring in the brand's 7-year, 115,000 km powertrain warranty.

My only major beef was its fuel consumption. While its 3.7-L V6 is powerful it's doesn't compete at the pump when compared with others in this category. But why? Despite its substantially smaller dimensions the Liberty weighs just about as much as the Grand Cherokee. So if you are not prepared to open your mind and wallet to octane, you might want to reconsider. But, depending on your circumstances, it's a sustainable price to pay when factoring the Liberty's other merits. The estimated annual fuel cost hovers at $1,603.

I also found little details that don't appeal to me. The power window buttons are in an awkward location, placed on the front side of the mini console. I am a traditional, button-on-window kind of gal. That reason alone wouldn't put me off purchasing one though, as I think it would grow on me. As I mentioned earlier, taller people might have comfortability issues because the Liberty has a relatively low head clearance, important as I'm attracted to skyscraper guys.

As I departed from the well used, muddy Jeep, I heard the song "please don't take my sunshine away," echoing in the back of my head. It was so practical to have around, so safe and comfortable to drive, and when it comes right down to it, a lot of fun. If you're looking for a powerful, compact, quintessential SUV, the 2003 Jeep Liberty Renegade 4x4 should be on your list. It will take you places you never dreamed of going, and you'll look great getting there.
