Last-gen SRX boasted exciting driving dynamics--but wasn't without its issues
Shopping for a crossover, new or used, can be a frustrating and overwhelming experience. Aside from the sheer volume of machinery competing for your dollar, crossovers are a vaguely-defined genre of people-mover that often come in numerous configurations.

2004 Cadillac SRX

If you’re looking for a cheap and simple used family crossover, I’ll save you some time and tell you to sign off here. This story focuses on the first-generation Cadillac SRX— a machine that takes a higher-end approach to family hauling.

The totally redesigned new SRX is on sale for the 2010 model year—meaning the former first-generation machine has now officially completed its life-cycle.

As a Crossover, the SRX existed somewhere imprecisely between a minivan, wagon and SUV. Like many of its competitors, it was available with 6 or 8-cylinder power, 2 or 4 wheel drive, and plenty goodies. It was sold to Canadians from 2004 to 2009.

Standard was a 3.6 litre V6 with horsepower in the 260 ballpark, a five or six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Owners after more snap or confidence while towing could specify a Northstar V8 engine with 4.6 litres displacement and 320 horsepower.

Shoppers looking for a versatile interior and plenty of equipment in a used crossover should find the SRX impressive. All power accessories were standard, and SRX owners were treated to wood trim, heated leather seating, a sunroof and xenon lights—depending on the model in question. Memory seats and mirrors were available, as was a CD-changer premium audio system, and a motorized liftgate.

Shoppers after the fully-loaded package can look for a V8-powered SRX, or be sure to ask the seller which options are included. The SRX V8 got more standard equipment, though the SRX V6 could be loaded up nicely too. Like most premium brands, Cadillac didn’t designate the SRX with any obvious trim level system, so a bit of research may be required to track down the options you’re after.
