With performance being Mazda's new mantra the 6 needed to excel from a driver's perspective. Starting with a 160-hp 2.3-L inline 4-cylinder in its base GS and well equipped GT trim levels, the 6 produces 155 lb-ft of torque which should result in fairly decent acceleration considering its 1,380 kg (3,042 lb) base curb weight, even when equipped with the optional 4-speed manual Sport mode automatic - a 5-speed manual is standard. But Mazda didn't stop there. Both a GS-V6 and GT-V6 are available, each with the same 220-hp 3.0-L engine producing an identical 192 lb-ft of torque, a perfect mate for the upgraded sequential shifting Sport mode 5-speed automatic transmission, and then again even better with the V6's standard 5-speed manual.

Putting a stop to its forward momentum shouldn't be difficult either, due to Mazda's sophisticated 4 sensor, 3-channel ABS equipped 4-wheel disc brakes, assisted further by electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) making the most of each tire's contact patch. Furthermore, Traction Control System (TCS) is standard as is ABS, while GT-I4, GS-V6 and GT-V6 versions add side-impact and side curtain airbags.

Handling is reportedly superb, with engine-rpm-sensing variable power assist rack-and-pinion steering that is said to best many of the class leaders in high-speed drivability. The 6 incorporates a fully independent suspension setup, with high-mount double wishbones, coil springs and a stabilizer bar up front and a multi-link setup with coil springs and a stabilizer bar in the rear.
