If some are uncomfortable with the S80's exterior design, it's easy to warm up to the interior. While BMW may be driver-focused and ergonomics may be Saab's forte, the S80's interior combines the best of both worlds plus what has been reported to be exceptional comfort. Volvo is renowned for making some of the world's most comfortable seats and its flagship sedan would no doubt be endowed with its best. Designed with orthopedics in mind, and with the brand's patented active headrest restraint (WHIPS) system, the electrically adjustable seats keep driver and passengers in place without sacrificing any business class comfort.

An interesting thing to note is that the S80 looks and is said to feel luxurious without resorting to a complicated layout of controls. Instead of featuring a flurry of tiny buttons, Volvo opts for clear, chunky HVAC controls that could very well be operated blindfolded (I don't recommend you do this while driving mind you).

While the S80 AWD is comfortable and solid, the six year old model is starting to show its age. (Photo: Volvo)
Optional to the S80 is an in-car navigation system. The thin LCD screen pops up from atop the dashboard, just like in the XC90, and retracts away neatly when not in use, reducing dashboard clutter. The only noticeable changes inside the new model are redesigned door panels, which incorporate larger handles, plus the choice of wood or aluminum trim throughout. AWD models don't get the fancy aluminum ringed instruments inspired by the S60R and V70R - they are reserved for front-wheel drive V6 and T6 models.

While the refreshed S80 AWD is targeting a comfort-oriented executive buyer, it's starting to show its age. The powerplant is a solid, reliable unit, and the improved steering rack reportedly aims to please, geared for accurate turn-in and feel, but it's important to remember that this is a six year old car facing down 21st century-designed competition.
