Still, the S80 is as safety oriented as any Volvo has ever been, a benefit that's difficult to put a price on. It's racked up countless safety medals, ranging from four NHTSA 5-star ratings, a 'Best Pick' from the IIHS and four stars in EuroNCAP's program.
With that acknowledged, I can't exactly say that this Swede is outclassed by its rivals, because it's not. It does what a luxury sedan is supposed to do, and while it reportedly has its flaws they only add to the car's distinct character. Since its introduction in 1998, the S80 has led Volvo in a complete evolution from extremely square to distinctively cool. The flagship Volvo is desirable in its own peculiar way, and it's been a success in that form. 2004's update and the addition of all wheel drive have furthered the car's charisma... but just don't go taking it off road.
