Last-generation Grand Cherokee offered V6, V8 or diesel power, fairly solid reliability
Owners tend to rate the ride quality, confidence, safety and all-weather, all-terrain operation of their Grand Cherokee’s the most favorably. Many also like the upgraded stereo system and xenon lighting on the higher-end ‘Overland’ model. Owners of HEMI-powered models also rave about performance—and gripe terribly about gas mileage.

Common complaints deal with fuel consumption, less-than-expected interior space, some awkward placement to several controls and limited rear-seat legroom. Some owners of models with the standard V6 wish for more power, too.

Look for the last-generation Grand Cherokee with features like a hard-drive based premium audio system, full multimedia connectivity, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, heated leather seating, navigation and all of the staple features as standard. Several unique packages were available—topping out as the nicely-dressed ‘Overland’ model with all the toys.

When shopping for a machine with the intentions of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a full check beneath the vehicle is crucial. Observe the underside for signs of leaks, dents, excessive rust or holes. Now is the ideal time to find out if the former owner put a boulder through the floor pan while off-roading, or if years of neglect in cleaning mud and debris from the underside has resulted in accelerated rust. Remember-- if you’re not mechanically inclined, the vehicle should go to a mechanic for a check-up before purchase.

Ensure all fluid changes are up to date, budgeting for a full fluid change and tune-up if the vehicle’s service history is unavailable. Where possible, opt for a model that’s as close to stock as you can, unless you’re up to speed on common Grand Cherokee upgrades and comfortable with the quality of their installation.
