Last-generation Grand Cherokee offered V6, V8 or diesel power, fairly solid reliability
Common problems with expensive, drivetrain-related systems seem fairly minor and sporadic. Transmission issues aren’t unheard of though—and they tend to centre around sensors and the software controlling the gearbox, rather than the gearbox itself. Test-drivers should ensure the Grand Cherokee they’re considering shifts smoothly and without any undue noise or slippage, and look for a model with service records indicating all transmission maintenance is up to date, just to be safe. If the transmission on the Grand Cherokee you’re considering ‘bangs’ into gear on upshifting, make double sure to have the problem inspected before agreeing to purchase.

Additionally, ensure the Grand Cherokee you’re considering switches between its 4-low and 4-high modes as described in the owner’s manual. This relatively simple check should be considered mandatory. A rough idle or ‘missing’ sensation during acceleration, possibly accompanied by a ‘Check Engine’ light could be caused by a faulty sensor or engine computer. A ‘computer scan’ can help diagnose the issue.

Listen for any strange clicking, whining or grinding sounds from beneath the vehicle at lower speeds, especially during turning, which could indicate a worn out differential.

Note that the Grand Cherokee was subject to a fairly lengthy list of recalls, and that a Chrysler dealer can advise shoppers whether any recall work is outstanding on the model they purchased if provided with its VIN number.
Where real-world off-road capability and plenty of selection in the powertrain department are concerned, a well-maintained Grand Cherokee should prove a fairly solid bet.
