That's a shame, because as it stands, the 280-hp, 3.6-litre V6-powered Q7 is very well mannered on the road. True, accelerations are not as athletic as those of the 350-hp 4.2-litre V8, but 0-100 kph sprints are still achieved in eight very reasonable seconds--barely one second slower than with the big mill.

The V6 provides ample performance.

One would tend to believe that the Q7's nearly 2,500-kilo (5,500-lb) weight seriously hampers driving dynamics when powered by the V6 engine but, fortunately, that's not the case. Kudos to Audi for developing such a versatile, generous and ultra smooth 6-speed Tiptronic transmission--a true marvel of technology.

A different Q7
I must admit that I had the opportunity to test the V8-powered Q7 on a couple of occasions. Each time, I wrote in my notebook that this particular model felt like the least German of all Audi vehicles. Its sportiness did not meet my expectations. In other words, the driving was pleasant but not really exciting.

Oddly enough, the Q7 V6 felt so much like an entirely different vehicle that I was tempted to revise my previous notes. How is that possible? Well, among other things, the base model can't be equipped with the optional air suspension ($3,200), which means that the ride remains firm and sporty--much to my delight.

A little getting used to
One thing's for sure: while the base Q7 lacks the advanced technologies listed earlier, its interior is as sharp and striking as the premium model's. The soundproofing is excellent, the fit and finish is outstanding and passengers enjoy great comfort. A two-way trip between Montreal and Quebec City is completed without any complaint.

However, in order to enjoy the Q7's qualities, you first have to take time to get used to Audi's Multi-Media Interface (MMI). If not, you'll constantly be distracted behind the wheel--I guarantee it.

The interior of the Q7 4.2 Premium.
