MMI, which controls just about every vehicle function, is not very user-friendly, even for tech geeks. The various buttons and knobs are located near the base of the shifter rather than in the upper portion of the dashboard, where your eyes are naturally led to. Bad idea. In fact, it drains a large part of the driver's attention, which could result in a serious accident. On the flipside, some of the controls, like the audio system's, are mounted on the steering wheel.

The MMI system requires a lot of getting used to.

Next: a diesel engine

As early as 2008, a diesel-powered variant should hit Audi's North American showrooms.

Also, according to our sources, the 2008 Q7's trim levels will be simplified. We'll have to wait and see if the base model receives some of the premium technologies or if it remains the lesser child of Audi's first SUV family.

Well mannered on the road
Generous and smooth Tiptronic transmission
Quality interior

Interesting technology... but not available on the base model
Third-row seats offer little comfort

The MMI is a real distraction
No leather seating, even at $55,000...
