There are two ways to enjoy this special edition: in the streets, by revelling at the sweet engine harmonics below 3,000 rpm (much like the movie cop on the prowl), or on the track, by pushing the car to the limit and taking advantage of its predictable handling. Even at low speed, the sound is everywhere. And beyond 3,000 rpm, just forget about the audio system (as good as it may be).

My main complaint is the irritating noise made by turn signals; it rapidly got on my nerves and even took my attention away from the stereo and the engine.

The brakes are commendable. Ford used upgraded front brake pads to improve heat dissipation and reduce fading. I was able to stop from 100 to 0 kph over 38.4 meters.

For pure pleasure and under-the-radar performance, this Mustang Bullitt sure brings back a lot of fond memories.

The Bullitt loves to corner and is easy to align with the gas pedal. I never felt the need to deactivate the stability and traction control systems given how well calibrated they are for a sports car. Rear axle hops are effectively neutralized on slippery roads, while takeoffs are brisk and pleasant. Handling is tenacious and predictable, and although the ride is firm, I found it reasonably comfortable on the byroads of Quebec. The solid rear axle acts up a little on bumpy roads, but control is never in jeopardy. Accelerations are strong and convincing, especially when passing slower vehicles or entering the highway.

Fuel economy is in line with the car's performance. I wound up with an average of 13.7 L/100 km, which is surprisingly frugal for such a high-performing engine. Best of all, it doesn't even require premium fuel!

Unique like McQueen
Each unit of the 2008 Mustang Bullitt is identified by a special plate marked with the serial number. My tester retailed for $43,019, which is $10,000 more than the base GT. It featured a navigation system and hands-free phone connectivity.

For pure pleasure and under-the-radar performance (you know what I mean), this Mustang Bullitt sure brings back a lot of fond memories.
