Only one powertrain
Regardless of the model you select, the Astra only comes with a single engine choice: a 1.8L 4-cylinder Ecotec that enthusiastically generates 140 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque.

The 1.8L 4-cylinder engine comes with a 5-speed manual transmission and an optional 4-speed automatic transmission.

The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission which offers a disappointing feel. While the gears are nicely spaced and the shifter offers a good grip, you sometimes get the impression that you need to work a bit more to find the proper cog. It takes a quick getting used to, although takeoffs are slightly harder.

The optional 4-speed automatic transmission knows its role, but that's the most I can say. An additional gear would have been appreciated (same goes for the manual, actually), since the engine literally roars at 3,700 rpm when the car is going 110 kph. This behavior may in fact hint at power -- and fuel economy -- issues.

Dynamic and efficient
Although not perfect, the compact Astra shows great potential. Its main quality is without question its flawless and supremely pleasant ride. On California's roads, where I drove for a few hundreds of kilometers, the Astra seemed both agile and compliant like few other cars can.

At some point, my colleague and I found ourselves deep into the Californian valley, where single-lane roads force you to pull over and leave way for incoming trucks. Despite these constraints, not to mention the significant inclines, the little Saturn proved to be up to the task, delivering all the fun we could expect in every situation.

The power steering is still deliciously responsive and provides generous road feedback. The 4-wheel disc brakes are quick to react once you need them and the car's handling allows for a spirited yet comfortable driving experience.

The front and rear suspensions, while sport-tuned on some models, are far from being unpleasant. For instance, the 3-door Astra XR benefits from a sports suspension with a 15-mm lower ride height, a shorter-ratio steering, a specific front axle configuration and a sports chassis system. Every bushing of the front suspension has been carefully studied to reduce noise, vibration and harshness levels.

Heartthrob
I've always preferred European-inspired driver's cars. The charm, dynamics and performances of these sporty machines from overseas have long made me envious. This time, GM managed to bring over a European model that retains all its qualities while meeting every North American standard, which is quite an accomplishment.

It's a slap in the face to all the automakers that still refuse to grant Canadians access to their European cars (reportedly too costly to import). We'll now have to wait and see if the 2008 Saturn Astra will conquer the hearts of domestic drivers. I can tell you one thing, though: it has already won me over.
