Behind the wheel
Value can easily be undermined by a dearth of pleasure behind the wheel; fortunately that’s not the case here. The Avenger SXT supplies a smooth, quiet ride – irrespective of occasional engine noise – that will undoubtedly please those with such expectations.
The vehicle is relaxing to drive but suffers somewhat from compromised rear/side visibility due to the aggressive cut-line of the rear side glass. Stylistically, the design adds flair but not without minor consequences.
Steering is light, and feedback is suitable for this segment of automobile. Brakes performance is progressive and easy to modulate.
Unless the R/T package is ordered, don’t expect lightning-quick reflexes from the Avenger. This affable sedan is more focused on occupant comfort than handling performance, and that’s not unexpected or disappointing.
I appreciated the gentle manner exhibited by my tester, which I imagine is consistent with its target market.
Avenger wrap
Apart from its bold styling, the 2009 Avenger is solid, comfortable mode of mid-size transportation that cares for the safety and comfort of its occupants while returning decent fuel economy but uninspiring performance.
The recent price adjustment significantly elevates the value quotient of this otherwise modest competitor in a highly competitive market.
