The current generation Ranger has been around longer than any another vehicle in the Ford catalogue. But it’s the top-selling compact truck in Canada, and one of most fuel-efficient. It generates sales mostly through keen pricing, and fuel efficiency via its 143-hp 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine, one of smallest and least powerful engines you can get in a pickup.

Body styles are Regular (extended) and Super Cab (four-door). No crew cabs anymore, or 7-foot beds (all models now get 6-foot beds).

Prices start at $17,799, and the model range continues to be XL, Sport and XLT.

Both the standard 2.3-litre I4 and the optional 207-hp 4.0-litre V6 are available with 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmissions.

The FX4 off-road model is no more, but a new FX4 “package” is available on Sport 4x4 models. Package highlights include 4.10 axle, cruise, tilt, 16-inch “Y” Spoke aluminum wheels, step bars, privacy glass, power equipment group, sliding rear window, and cloth bucket seats.

Another interesting package is the Fuel Economy Leader Package, exclusively available on the regular cab XL. It gets its fuel economy (9.5 L/100 km city/7.3 L /100 km highway) by avoiding too many weighty features. Standard are 15-inch painted wheels and vinyl 60/40 split bench seat.

But if you need more than just adequate motivation and some towing power, you’ll have to opt for the V6.

Notable standards features on all models are anti-lock brakes, roll stability control, and side air bags.
