Toyota's entry-level sedan is nice and simple
Highway passing in most situations is decent, though it can feel labored if the resulting downshift puts the car at lower revs in the bottom of third gear.

Of course, Corolla’s standard five-speed stick would help draw out the most performance. Mileage on my watch averaged about 7.5L / 100km, and it's often 40 or 50 kilometres before the fuel gauge even moves from ‘F’. Put another way, drivers can expect a 100 kilometre road trip to cost under $8 in fuel.

The ride feels tight and well bolted down, though the small wheels can transmit a bumpy harshness into the cabin over rougher surfaces. Noise levels on the highway are about average for the class, and in all, no major complaints arose in this department either.

Pre-accessory pricing on the tester was $18,165.

Looking good

As a simple, accommodating and functional compact sedan, the Corolla works wonderfully. In fact, after a week at the wheel, I could find pleasantly little to complain about.

Of course, excitement is far from the Corolla's priority. If it's yours, models like the Ford Focus or Mazda 3 both offer a more energetic character and dynamic looks.

If you're looking at your next small car purchase more as an investment in a sturdy reputation and good resale value, the Corolla should be at or near the top of your list.
