Is this your year to buy a convertible? Are you set on something sensible and efficient that isn’t prohibitively expensive? If that’s the case, your Volkswagen dealer would love to show you the 2010 Eos. It’s the German brand’s unique retractable hard-top model that offers great fuel mileage, plenty of luxury and year-round operation.

With the roof up, the Eos’s clean lines, chrome trim and sunroof suggest an upscale coupe. At the driver’s request, things turn to fun in the sun with a little help from the motorized top. In moments, it automatically retracts into the trunk—leaving a magical, open-topped motoring experience behind. Regardless of coupe or drop-top configuration, LED taillamps, alloy wheels and projector headlights step up the Eos’s compact, high-class looks.

All Eos models are motivated by Volkswagens high-efficiency 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine. This celebrated powerplant sends 200 horsepower to the front wheels through a six-speed manual or six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). Performance is brisk, and mileage is excellent.

Inside, owners are treated to a premium cabin with contrasting colours and textures, plenty of storage, and room for 4 adults. Alloy pedals, leather surfaces, a navigation system and an upgraded audio system are all available. A wind blocker, parking radar and special ski bag can be added, too.

Offering control and protection are a standard antilock braking system with four-wheel discs, VW’s Electronic Stabilization Programme (ESP), and rear-impact optimized headrests. Additionally, there’s a four-point belt at each seating position.

Unlike most German convertibles, the Eos won’t relieve shoppers of enormous sums of money should they decide to take it home. In fact, pricing for the 2010 Eos starts at well under $37,000.
