Volkswagen is capitalizing on the sleek new restyle of its 2010 Golf to launch a meaner-looking 2010 GTI. The high-performance variant built on the Golf platform just took the stage at the 2009 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), embodying the latest from the long-lived model that's found fame with enthusiasts after economical performance and fun-to-drive dynamics.

The 2010 Golf boasts a new platform with the highest levels of safety, refinement and quality the namesake has ever seen--meaning that the GTI model will move upmarket even further.

Various styling updates set the GTI apart, and showgoers noted the lowered stance, unique red grille piping, exclusive wheels and dual-outlet rear exhaust.

No major surprises under the hood--just a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that's intercooled and direct-injected for an optimized blend of power and efficiency. A bit more power has been added for the new GTI, with total output rated at 210 horsepower.

Six speed transmissions are available in the shoppers choice of manual or dual-clutch with shift paddles. Owners can expect 0-60 in the 7-second ballpark, alongside respectable fuel mileage if they successfully fight the temptation to stay out of the sauce.

The 2010 GTI is set to go on sale this spring.
