Allison is back with a new 1000-series 6-speed automatic transmission designed to cope with the extra grunt generated by the D-Max (that's GM speak...). It also includes a new exhaust brake system capable of controlled vehicle slowdown on downhill grades without caliper assistance. The new box is more efficient thanks to reduced “spin loss” (the transmission sends more engine power to the wheels).

Now, beyond the details, my job is to tell you how it all comes together to make the GM HDs the most capable and robust heavy duty trucks on the road. Well, I can't. At least not today. My plan was to publish my first drive today but I found out last minute that there was an embargo on my driving impressions until Monday.

Therefore, you'll have to wait until then to find out more about GM's new Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra HD. Look for a gallery and maybe even a few viral videos showing off what GM had us perform with their trucks.

Until then, stay classy San Diego.
