New-gen Explorer goes hi-tech and uni-body
Packed with features!
While Ford was certainly not letting anybody drive off with the lone Explorer on stage, we had a chance to sit in it, and poke and prod about.

Some highlights:
  • To aid towing, you can order a reverse camera with zoom-in functionality.
  • Third row powers up and down and will accommodate tidy adults. I felt comfy enough back there, although I couldn't rest too much of my thigh on the seat cushions (knees have to be bent).
  • MyFord driver connect technology and SYNC, with 4.2-inch LCD screen.
  • Four 12-volt power points.
  • Two sun roofs.
  • Six-speed transmission, with available SelectShift.
  • Available adaptive cruise with collision warning and brake support.
  • Blind Spot Information System, with cross-traffic alert.

New Explorer Era

Ford seems to have lots of SUV/Crossover options these days: Escape, Edge, Explorer, Flex.

Ford of Canada's Roy notes that Explorer is a name that continues to resonate with buyers, particularly those looking for traditional SUV virtues and looks, but with greater fuel efficiency and features.

He adds that customers are not hung up on which vehicle is body-on-frame or unibody; they're more interested in what the vehicle can do, than the nature of its construction.

But new format or not, Explorer will continue to battle old rivals, like Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota 4Runner.

2011 Explorer models will arrive at Canadian dealerships this winter.
