Overprotective stability control
Dynamically, the Genesis Coupe is willing to play rough, but somehow the car doesn’t feel as buttoned down as we’d like. Powering through 270-degree highway on-ramps, the car exhibits some understeer, while the V6’s muscle tries to break the rear tires loose. The 2.0T version, with its lighter engine, seems a tad more balanced.

However, all that doesn’t really matter as the Genesis Coupe’s traction and electronic stability control systems bring all that fun to a grinding halt by stepping in abruptly like an overprotective parent. The system doesn’t modulate its intervention very much; rather, it bogs everything down in a jerkishly irritating way. For race-car driver wannabes, you can’t really get yourself in serious trouble aboard Hyundai’s rear-drive coupe.

Great cockpit
Unlike the car’s dynamics, there is little to fault with the interior. The dashboard and door panels sport decent-quality assembly and finish, while the centre-stack control layout is straightforward and easy to operate while driving. The only flaw – and we’re being picky here – is the window-switch buttons that require twisting your palms to use.

Although the Genesis’ dimensions are generally smaller than the Accord Coupe’s, front-seat accommodations are just as good, with slightly better headroom and legroom. The back seat is sport-coupe snug, however, and adult occupants will rub their heads on the ceiling: for my 7- and 8-year-old kids, no problem.

A 10-speaker Infinity stereo is standard in most Genesis Coupe models, and offers quality sound while including a 6-CD changer, satellite radio, a USB port and Bluetooth audio streaming. The latter, however, doesn’t take control of your handheld device for browsing music, unlike the systems in other brands – at least, it didn’t work with my BlackBerry Torch.
