Korea builds a pony car
And in 6th gear at 100 km/h, the engine spins at 2,300 rpm, keeping the cabin quiet and fuel economy reasonable; our average during the course of the week worked out to 11.1 L/100km.

Affordable sportiness
The Coupe 3.8’s $32,999 MSRP before taxes, freight and delivery gets you all the aforementioned stuff in addition to climate control, leather upholstery with heated front seats, an intelligent key system, cruise control, a power driver’s seat, xenon headlights and a power sunroof.

You also get a car that has somewhat nastier attitude than the Honda Accord Coupe and the Nissan Altima Coupe, who are both two-grand more expensive than the Hyundai when equipped with V6 engines. A sports coupe with character is rather cool.

The party pooper, however, is the Ford Mustang. A loaded V6 version with leather is about $2,500 cheaper than the Genesis. And a hot-blooded, 412-hp GT is about 35 grand. Decisions, decisions…

Could the Hyundai Genesis Coupe be called a “pony car?” We don’t think so, but then again, it’s got all the ingredients to rival those coupes from Ford, GM and Chrysler (minus a V8 engine, which they have in their parts bin) while being an interesting alternative to the Japanese midsize coupes. As much as we like revving that V6 engine, we think the cheaper, 2.0T model is a better choice.
