The Chevrolet Malibu did a very important thing in the marketplace for its latest iteration: For perhaps the first time ever, this mainstream American sedan has given the Japanese competition a real, and serious, run for their money.
Competing with the Sonata, Accord and Camry, Malibu boasted numerous powertrain options, honest pricing, a great warranty, and an eerily quiet ride characteristic much more common on more expensive vehicles.
Chevrolet’s designers and engineers have been busily at work enhancing and updating their sedan for the 2013 model year, where it’s set to become the best Malibu yet by way of new styling, powertrain hardware, and technology.
“The current Malibu has left an award-winning impression and changed the way people think about Chevrolet. It redefined what an American midsize car could be,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “This all-new Malibu delivers on the intangibles of today’s Malibu but gives customers even more: more style, fuel efficiency, content and features, craftsmanship, and dynamic capabilities rivaling high-end sedans.”
New visual DNA ties in cosmetic details sourced from the Cruze, Camaro and Corvette, giving the 2013 Malibu a more dynamic and alert look. Wider and more aggressive, it’s designed to stand out all over the world. Xenon lighting, LED taillamps and available 19” wheels should help do the trick as well.
Of course, fuel efficiency is top-of-mind for today’s family sedan shopper, so the 2013 Malibu will be jammed full of advanced gas-saving engineering. An all-new 2.5L direct-injected 4-cylinder engine and next-generation 6-speed automatic will lead the powertrain lineup with over 190 horsepower. Advanced aerodynamics will be applied as well, using wind-tunnel lessons taken from the Chevrolet Volt to further trim down fuel consumption. Chevrolet has even installed active front grille shutters that enhance aerodynamics in real time.
A new Malibu Eco will be added to the lineup featuring GM’s eAssist technology that was introduced in the 2012 Buick LaCrosse and Regal sedans. It basically adds an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery to assist the 2.4L gas engine to reduce fuel consumption. The eAssist system adds up to 15 hp during heavy acceleration. The Eco also benefits from regenerative braking and engine start-stop functionality.
