Half car half SUV, the Outback is still a pillar in the Subaru lineup and one of the favourite choices of Canadians to tackle our winters

The New York Auto Show is fast approaching and automakers are taking turns sending out teasers for their big premieres. This time it was Subaru’s turn to reveal ahead of the reveal, or at least show a little bit of skin of one of its core models. The image we see is of the Outback, which is getting a redesign for 2020.

The new edition will sit on the carmaker’s new global platform, the same that will be used by the next Legacy. This new structure will ensure greater stiffness and help reduce wind noise.

There’s also speculation about changers afoot under the hood. Buyers will, it appears, get the choice of several engines, starting with a 182-hp 4-cylinder Boxer engine. And if the Outback follows the Legacy’s lead, it will also be available with the 2.4L 4-cylinder turbo engine that runs the new Ascent SUV. This unit and its 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque should make an interesting contribution to the performance of the Outback.

On board, it’s expected the model will get a new presentation centered around a large high-definition screen on which the multimedia system is accessed.

Any other concrete details will have to wait for next week’s official presentation in New York. We’ll be there that of course for that and will have photos and a full report for you on the 2020 Subaru Outback.
