With rivals Ford and GM both dropping out of the minivan scene in pursuit of crossover vehicles, Chrysler group happily announced pricing and features for their new and upcoming Dodge Grand Caravan minivan yesterday.

The Grand Caravan SE "Canadian Value Package" starts at $26,495 -- a reduction of nearly $4,000 from the previous model.

New features will be added to the equation as well -- including a six-speed transmission and standard stability control and side-curtain airbags. A new 4.0-litre, 251-horsepower engine is available, and the base V6 engine consists of a 3.3-litre unit with 175 horsepower which is flex-fuel compatible.

The mid-range Grand Caravan Stow'n'Go starts at $28,795 and is powered by the same 3.3-litre engine as the SE, though additional features and utility are fitted above and beyond the base model. These include anti-static and anti-stain fabrics, fold-in-floor bucket seats, cruise control, and a front-row centre console. The Stow'n'Go model can be optionally equipped with a new Swivel'n'Go seating system which allows rear occupants to face one another across a built-in table.

For a more sporting appearance and even more hardware, the Grand Caravan SXT brings fog lights, remote start, adjustable pedals, a leather-wrapped shift knob, heated mirrors, 16" wheels, a tachometer and a compass to the equation. Optionally available on the SXT is a 3.8-litre, 197-horsepower V6 attached to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Available SXT features include the Swivel 'n Go seat system; a rear backup camera; AM/FM/CD/DVD/MP3/HDD MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System; single- and dual-screen DVD entertainment systems; trailer tow package; and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

"Canadian consumers have made our minivans among Canada's most popular vehicles for more than twenty years, based on a simple value equation that there is not a vehicle that delivers more utility and fun at a lower price than a Dodge or Chrysler minivan," said Reid Bigland, President of DaimlerChrysler Canada. "By lowering the starting pricing and adding new features, we will make sure it remains the best value on the market, regardless of vehicle type, make or model. The all-new 2008 Dodge and Chrysler minivans offer customers a "family room on wheels" for just about every lifestyle and price point."

Expect to see the new breed of Dodge's fabled family haulers on showroom floors this fall.
