Touring the grounds, it becomes obvious that many race fans get right into these events and come prepared for the whole weekend (in fact, some had been there since Tuesday for the practice sessions). Many camped in tents, others in rather large and luxurious motor homes, but they all had one thing in common, and that was, they were all having a great time.
Mind you, I could see why! The excitement and noise as the cars rounded the course was amazing. The diesel powered LMP1 Audi's literally need to be seen to be believed. Actually, seen is a good word there because they are so quiet compared to the others. Honestly, one minute there's a GT1 car in sight, the next, a diesel Audi R10 comes out of nowhere and passes it like it was standing still. I tell you, the idea of running a bunch of different class vehicles on the same track at the same time would scare the hell out of me if I was driving.
Speaking of that, guess who got to pilot one of the new Audi A4's around the track during one the breaks? Oh yes, although we were limited by the R8 up front, I was one of the lucky drivers. Press cards have their privileges, don't leave home without one!
Actually, I've driven the Driver Development Track at Mosport before but I've never ventured onto the main track, so it was an amazing experience, especially in front of so many spectators!
I couldn't even begin to guess just how many race fans were present but as we passed the Audi hospitality marquee, it was almost obscured by a sea of Audi fans waving flags.
Mind you, they had a lot to be happy about, especially at the end of the race, although from what I heard, that was pretty much a foregone conclusion anyway!
It was amazing to see how the different cars and class of cars handled the track. The Porsches looked and sounded amazing, as did the prancing horses, but I have to be honest here and mention my favorite. Now it might not have been the fastest car of the day but the green Aston Martin got my vote for the cheekiest. To see an Aston with the number 007 blazed down the side had me grinning from ear to ear!
