Audi has introduced a self-driving variant of the new 2017 R8 e-tron concept that originally premiered during the Geneva Motor Show last March, Autoguide reports. The launch took place at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Asia in Shanghai.

The powertrain components are the same including a pair of electric motors that produce a combined 455 horsepower and 678 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) takes just 3.9 seconds.

The 2017 Audi R8 e-tron self-driving concept uses cameras, radars, ultrasonic sensors, and a brand new laser scanner to monitor the road in real time. The battery can be fully charged in less than two hours, and provides a range of about 450 kilometres.

When the regular 2017 Audi R8 e-tron goes on sale, buyers in select markets may have the possibility to pay extra for a form of automated driving as optional equipment.
