A decent performance for used F150, but avoid early years
With the new Ford F-150 now on sale, used truck shoppers are assured a plentiful selection of the last-generation F-150 will wind up on dealer lots as lease returns and trade-ins.

The 2004 Ford F-150 hit the road intending to be the most advanced Ford pickup ever- a goal which could be both a blessing and a curse in the used vehicle market. With a completely new frame, body and selection of technologies and features, the F-150 appealed to masses of shoppers and Ford truck fans from the get-go.

As awards from publication across North America piled into Ford's trophy rack and various special F-150 models hit dealers, things got even better. Chances are you'll have little trouble tracking down a newer used F-150 that's perfect for your needs.

When it comes to vehicles this popular, you'll also have little trouble finding other owners willing to share their experience. Most F-150 drivers rate the comfort, styling and space of their machines the most highly.

One owner even commented that he felt 'spoiled' every time he drove his truck, and that his family loved the feeling of safety and sturdiness built right in. That feeling isn't an empty threat, as the truck earned good marks in crash testing for occupant protection.

Hauling and payload capacitates are also largely appreciated by those owners who work their machines, and the available super-crew cabin and premium amenities are popular with those using their pickup for family duties. Most owner gripes deal with fuel mileage and relatively meager performance, even with the big V8 engine.

The high-end 5.4 litre unit generated 300 horsepower, while the 4.6 litre V8 made as much as 248-- depending on the year you're shopping in. Ford's 'Essex' 4.2 litre V6 engine was also available, generating 231 horsepower. The six-cylinder model was available with a five-speed manual transmission, though the four-speed automatic was far more common.
