The only thought going through the head of European journalists right now is this: "Which car will succeed the Fiat 500, winner of the prestigious European Car of the Year award in 2008?"
No less than 37 cars from 26 manufacturers originally made up the list of candidates pre-selected by the European association. Today, one week before the new winner is announced, only 7 finalists remain. The 59 journalists from various publications represent 23 different European countries. The much-anticipated list is made up of the following cars (in alphabetical order): 1) Alfa Romeo MiTo 2) Citroën C5 3) Ford Fiesta 4) Opel/Vauxhall Insignia 5) Renault Mégane 6) Skoda Superb 7) Volkswagen Golf Interestingly, for one of the rare times in history, no luxury brands are among the finalists despite the notable presence of BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz. Also noteworthy is the fact that the Skoda Superb was first unveiled via television in Quebec City during the World Hockey Championship last May.
