The world suddenly has another midsize crossover nameplate — the GMC Terrain.

Had GM not restructured, the 2010 Terrain would have been the second-generation Pontiac Torrent.

Like the Torrent was, the Terrain is built alongside its Chev twin, Equinox, at CAMI Automotive Inc., the joint venture operation of GM and Suzuki, in Ingersoll, Ontario.

This unibody crossover slots in the line-up right beneath GMC’s larger unibody crossover, Acadia. With the arrival of Terrain, GMC will no longer market Envoy, the mid-size truck-based SUV (though the fullsize truck-based SUV, Yukon, is still very much in play).

The new-generation Equinox was unveiled earlier this year, so if you’re familiar with it, you’ll be quite familiar with Terrain.

Here are its main bullet points:
• Front wheel drive and AWD versions, two trim levels (SLE, SLT), $27,465 to $35,755.

• Five passenger seating, which can be optioned with Mutli-Flex rear seat, which can slide fore and aft to optimize legroom or cargo space (up to 1,800 litres).

• Standard equipment includes back-up camera, USB enabled stereo, six airbags, OnStar and stability control.

• Top-shelf SLT2 model throws on programmable lift gate, rear park assist, and appropriate amounts of chrome and leather.

• Typical family-friendly options, like Bluetooth, navigation, and rear-seat DVD. And note the interior is miles away from the low-rent digs of the last generation Equinox/Torrent.

• Also unlike the last generation vehicle, Equinox and Terrain now offer 4-cylinder power, to compete better with top-selling 4-cylinder rivals like Honda CRV and Toyota Rav4. The “four” in question is an all-new direct-injection 2.4 litre. Its six-speed tranny features an “ECO” mode that lowers the torque converter lock-up speed, to help the vehicle achieve a fuel efficiency rating of 6.1 L/100 km.

• V6 power is courtesy of a new direct-injection 3.0-litre unit also hooked up to a six-speed transmission.
