Concept cars often look great when unveiled, but sometimes great features of those concepts never make it to production. Hopefully, the BMW 6 Series Concept unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show will be put into production with barely any change, because it's simply one of the most exciting cars BMW made in the past years.
The brand-new redesigned body reminds of the Gran Coupe presented at the Beijing auto show earlier this year. Big dual exhausts and L-Shaped taillights really make the back of the car look meaner than ever, complimenting the lower and more stretched body lines of the 6 Series. An all-LED setup has also been added to the coupe for lighting, resulting in eye-catching headlights, taillights, daytime running lights, fog lights, and signal indicators. Also, an adaptive headlight function will change the light spray depending on steering angle and vehicle speed. 20-inch alloy wheels perfectly fitted to the body of the car were also added to the BMW.
As with the outgoing 6 Series, the Concept features individual rear seats, resulting in a whole lot more comfort for passengers in the back, something that the German manufacturer really worked on for its newer models. As soon as you hop in the car, the first noticeable feature consists of the 10.2-inch screen that perfectly compliments the center console.
The only question that remains about this car is about the engines that will be available for the next 6 Series. However, turbocharged inline-six and V8 engines are expected, a convertible version should also be offered and, of course, a powerful twin-turbo V8 M version. The first production models should come out in 2012.
BMW has confirmed that the 2012 6 Series Convertible will arrive in Canada next spring. The 650i will be powered by a 4.4-litre V8 that develops 400 horses and 450 lb-ft of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Like the previous-generation 6 Series, the new model will feature a power-folding soft top made from multi-layer canvas material, and BMW promises year-round sound-deadening and insulation.
New features include Integral Active Steering which includes a steerable rear axle that can virtually lengthen or shorten the car’s wheelbase for high-speed stability and low-speed parking manoeuvres, a head-up display with 3D graphics and a 360-degree camera system.
