Trying to join the environmentally-friendly bandwagon, Hyundai shared some details of their Blue Drive program at the Montreal show today.

2009 Hyundai Tucson FCEV

Essentially, Blue Drive is an initiative that the company is planning in order to achieve a fleet-wide fuel economy average of 6.7 L/100 km by 2015. To reach this goal, Hyundai will launch a hybrid version of the Sonata mid-size sedan, develop direct-injection turbocharged engines and introduce more-frugal versions of the Accent and Elantra.

In the future as well, the model line-up will include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles, as witnessed by a Tucson FCEV on display at the show.

The Sonata hybrid, due in 2010, will be powered by a 2.4-liter engine working in conjunction with an electric motor, all managed by a 6-speed automatic transmission. Like Toyota and Ford, the system will be able to function in an all-electric mode.

Accent and Elantra models will be available later this year in Blue trim, and will host a number a small changes to improve fuel economy: low-rolling-resistance tires, better aerodynamics, engine retuning and lower final drive ratios.
