Saab says their 9-3X is the 'smart all-rounder' for outdoor enthusiasts- and that said enthusiasts will get to see the new model next month. Wearing Saab's 'X' badge means a higher-than-average level of capability on all terrains and a focus on delivering the sort of all-weather, all-road confidence required of active families that play outside.

Photos show a jacked-up 9-3 wagon (Sport-Combi in Saab-speak) that looks like its dressed for a hike. Some extra body cladding, a taller stance, roof rails and a rugged character bring its underlying visual tone in line with competitors like the the Volvo XC70, Subaru Outback or the now-retired Audi Allroad.

Saab officials say the model utilizes their performance-enhancing Cross Wheel Drive (XWD) technology, and that it will be ideal for drivers who want to take their rides off-road without sacrificing on-road excitement. Power comes from a smooth and fuel-efficient two-litre turbo engine.

"The 9-3X is an efficient all-rounder for anyone who doesn't want or need an SUV- type vehicle," says Simon Padian, Saab Brand Design Chief. "Simply put, we are offering a trekking shoe that will do what's required in more comfort and style than a heavier mountaineering boot."

After its launch at next month's Geneva Motor Show, the Saab 9-3X will be available in showrooms this fall.
