Marketing folks have determined that a great way to sell Toyotas to young North Americans is to do so with a separate brand. The Scion brand was devised to do just that. Available in the US and parts of Canada, Scion is big on customizability, fun and value.

The folks at Scion division just pulled the curtain off of a new 'micro-subcompact car' prototype at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).

The car, which may be a rebadged Toyota iQ from other markets, will compete with the likes of the Smart Fortwo on our shores. Toyota says the model will be geared towards an increasing urbanization trend, and that it's being considered for launch on our side of the pond.

The iQ's small dimensions make it fuel efficient, diminutive and easy to park- regardless of the badge or name-tag it wears. In other markets, the iQ is available with a 1 litre engine, Continually Variable Transmission (CVT), and numerous add-on features. The Concept is powered by a 1.3-litre engine that develops 93 horses and 89 lb-ft.

Should it wind up on sale here, expect it to be positioned just under the Yaris 3-door hatch as Scion's entry-level model.
