Alfa Romeo has created over 70 different models during its 100 year history. But when Alfa Romeo’s UK subsidiary asked Alfistis to chose the greatest Alfa Romeo of all time, it all came down to two iconic models : the Giulia GTAm and the 8C Competizione. And the winner is (drum roll…): the GTAm. Tadam!
The Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm came first in this poll, beating the elegant 8C Competizione supercar with less than one percent more of the vote. The GTAm obtained 20.4 per cent of the overall tally and the 8C, 19.8 per cent!
The ‘lighter’ side of things!
Built from 1965 to 1975, the Alfa Romeo GTA was derived from the standard 1750 GT Veloce, a sporty coupé. The ‘A’ stood for “Alleggerita”, Italian for lightweight. Over the next ten years, three versions of the GTA were produced: the Giulia Sprint GTA, GTA 1300 Junior and GTA SA, with the two first being offered in either street (‘Stradale’) or racing (‘Corsa’) trim. A combined total of a little over 1000 units of all three models were built.
Then came the GTAm in 1970. Here ‘Am’ meant “Alleggerita Maggiorata”, Italian for lightened enlarged – which says it all. Weighing 920 kilos, this racer used a 237hp 2.0-liter in-line 4 engine with top speed of 230 km/h. Only 40 units of this ultimate GTA were built in 1970 and 1971.
The Giulia GTAm became part of Alfa’s elite models by winning the 1970 European Touring Car Championship in the hands of Dutchman Toine Hezemans.
8C and Duetto, second and third
The 8C Competizione - worth well over 250 000 $ US - debuted as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003 and went on to be produced in 2008 as a limited edition model of just 500 examples. The car’s name derives from Alfa’s world famous 8 cylinder (8C) engine and the marque’s racing pedigree.
Third in the survey came the Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto, widely regarded as a design classic. It finished with 16.01 per cent of the vote. This car was first launched in 1966 and famously starred in the legendary film The Graduate (1967), alongside Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft.
Votes for this poll were collected from consumers who visited the alfacentenary.co.uk website. They were also invited to submit photos of their favorite Alfas in order to create a unique cybermosaic artwork.
According to this survey the top 9 Alfa Romeos of all time are :
1.1750 GTAm
2.8C Competizione
3.Spider Duetto
4.Giulietta
5.Alfasud
6.156 GTA
7.159 Alfetta
8.8C 2900 B Le Mans
9.1600 Sprint Speciale
