Subaru has announced that their turbocharged WRX model will gain a whopping 41 horsepower for the 2009 model year- raising output from the current 224 to 265. The automaker says the move brings the WRX closer to its big brother the STI, in spirit. The Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart probably had something to do with it, too.
Derived from the potent Lancer Evolution, the Ralliart will be the WRX's closest competitor when it goes on sale. Ralliart packs all wheel drive and a de-tuned version of the Evolution's turbo engine that will generate 237 horsepower.
The move by Subaru to up the WRX's power will help them to maintain a leadership position in its segment. Power boosting upgrades to the 2.5 litre boxer engine include a low-density catalyst, larger turbocharger and higher boost levels.
The 2009 model will also wear a set of gunmetal colored alloy wheels and integrated body moldings including front spoiler.Thicker stabilizer bars and revamped spring rates help the car to handle the extra power as well. A five-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission available.
A four-speed automatic transmission with 'sport-shift' will be offered on the new-for-2009 Impreza 2.5GT, which carries on with the outgoing 224 horsepower WRX powerplant. All wheel drive is standard on both models.
