In print, their names look suspiciously similar at a quick glance- but Chrysler and Chery motors of China are hoping that they have a lot more in common than that.
The two automakers have reportedly been in discussions to make small cars for the USA, and could finalize the deal within a few weeks. One source suggested that the pair is in advanced negotiations at this point, though neither carmaker has yet commented.
Tom LaSorda, Chrysler Group's chief executive said on Monday that he hoped to name a partner for this project by the end of the year. The project would be funded mostly by Daimler Chrysler and would see the Chinese startup manufacturer produce the vehicles to be shipped to the USA for sale under the Chrysler brand. Chrysler currently has no offering into the small car segment which is becoming more and more popular overseas and in the US.
Another source said that the two could be in discussions that may lead to a future joint venture, and that other modes of participation are possible, although no further information was given.
